some suggestions and useful links for researching books and periodicals on the arts:

The USF Virtual Library is making resources more accessible than ever by adapting all of the search indexes to a web interface.  Below you will find links that will get you directly to some particularly useful tools for finding materials related to research in the arts.     A high-speed connnection is recommended.   Some of the search tools will request "proxy" information.  In all cases, your user name is "USF" and your i.d. number is the 14-digit number on your student  i.d. card.  For further information on proxy instructions and accessing the library's databases from a home computer, click here.

for locating books:

WebLuis:  University of South Florida library catalog:  Unless you are looking for a specific author or title, the "keyword" search will probably be most useful.    Separate keywords by a space (i.e., typing in "photography surrealism" will bring up books in the collection that have both of these as their primary subject matter.  When you've found a listing that interests you, clicking the "long view" button along the bottom menu bar which provides a more detailed description of the source.

For locating articles in journals:  these indexes operate the same as WebLuis above.    See "Finding Articles on Art and Architecture" compiled by Ilene Frank of the USF Library.    Here are a few search engines from this page which are particularly useful.   Increasingly many of these provide full-text on-line:

Project Muse:  A gateway to full-text articles and essays from over 250 journals covering the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education and other disciplines in the humanities.

Art Full Text and Art Index Retrospective: Two databases which index articles and essays on the arts from hundreds of publications.   Includes some access to the full-text.

Arts and Humanities Search:  Another excellent database which many full-text resources, especially useful for researching the social and cultural dimensions of photography.

Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) (a Eureka database):a index of articles from more than 2,500 sources spanning the last 25 years.  Once you reach the Eureka home page from this link, click on "change files" and follow the links to the BHA.

Expanded Academic Index (ASAP InfoTrak):  a more limited but useful source of articles and reviews.  Some full-text.

Note:  Many articles which are provided in full-text on-line do not include illustrations and more complete versions of these can be found on the shelves in the periodicals division of the library (2nd floor).
